When a vehicle is involved in a collision, attention quickly turns to the visible damage. But behind the scenes, it’s the unseen systems – like the airbags, seatbelt mechanisms, and even bonnet struts and hinges – that can make all the difference in a second crash. These components are part of the vehicle’s Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), and if they’re not repaired or replaced correctly, the consequences can be deadly.
Why SRS Repair Demands Attention

After deployment or significant impact, the following airbag system components typically require replacement or reprogramming:
- Airbags: Frontal, side, curtain, knee. If they’ve fired, they’re finished. In some cases, even unfired units may need replacement due to deformation or heat exposure.
- Seatbelt Pretensioners: These critical elements are part of every safe SRS repair. Once activated, they lose their effectiveness and must be swapped out.
- Control Module: The brain of the system. Many OEMs require replacement or reprogramming using OE software, especially where crash data has been stored.
- Crash Sensors: Often replaced as a set. Even if they didn’t trigger a deployment, their function post – impact can’t be guaranteed.
- Bonnet Struts and Hinges: These can contain pyrotechnic devices designed to lift or separate the bonnet during pedestrian impacts. If triggered, they must be replaced like any other SRS component.
