A damaged vehicle rolls into the workshop. The repairer checks the manufacturer’s information, confirms an ADAS calibration is required, and adds it to the estimate along with the diagnostic scans that support it. 

Then the pushback lands: Does it actually need to be done? 

Fair question, sometimes. Insurers and assessors are right to challenge estimates that are vague, padded, or missing evidence. Nobody’s arguing against scrutiny. 

But here’s the part that doesn’t get asked enough: when the vehicle manufacturer has already stated, in writing, that an ADAS calibration is required — who exactly gets to override that? The repairer? The assessor? The insurer? Or the company that engineered the safety system in the first place? 

ADAS Isn’t a Comfort Feature 

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems lean on cameras, radar, and a web of sensors to read what’s happening around the car. Depending on the model, that might mean: 

  • Automatic emergency braking 
  • Lane departure warning 
  • Lane keeping assistance 
  • Adaptive cruise control 
  • Blind spot monitoring 
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detection 

None of that is a nice-to-have. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that forward collision warning paired with automatic braking cut rear-end crashes by roughly half, and pedestrian-detecting automatic braking has shown a measurable drop in pedestrian crashes too.

That doesn’t mean every bumper repair or windscreen swap automatically triggers a calibration — it doesn’t. What it means is that the call shouldn’t be made by eyeballing the dashboard. A vehicle can show zero warning lights and still require ADAS calibration under the manufacturer’s own repair procedure. Lights on the dash and sensors doing their job correctly are two different things. 

A Scan Isn’t a Calibration 

This is where a lot of the confusion actually starts, and it’s worth being precise about it. 

pre-repair scan flags diagnostic trouble codes and establishes the vehicle’s condition before anyone touches it. A post-repair scan checks for faults once the repair’s done and gives you a record that the electronics have been reviewed. ADAS calibration checks if a camera or radar sensor is aimed correctly and performing to the manufacturer’s spec. 

A post-repair scan will tell you the vehicle is talking to the camera. It won’t tell you the camera is looking at the right spot on the road. 

So, approving a post-repair scan while knocking back a manufacturer-required ADAS calibration doesn’t actually complete the job — it just completes the part that’s easier to verify. 

Start With the Vehicle, Not a Habit 

Every manufacturer draws the line differently. Calibration can be triggered by: 

  • Replacing a windscreen 
  • Removing or replacing a camera 
  • Repairing or replacing a bumper 
  • Removing or replacing a radar sensor 
  • Structural repairs 
  • Steering or suspension work 
  • A wheel alignment 
  • A change in ride height 
  • Damage near a sensor mounting point 

There’s no single rule that covers every make and model, which is exactly why “what usually happens” isn’t a good enough answer. Neither is “there’s no warning light.” The only question that actually matters is what that specific manufacturer requires, for that specific vehicle, after that specific repair. 

Position Statements: Where the Manufacturer Draws the Line 

OEM position statements matter here, and they’re often misunderstood. A position statement is the manufacturer’s broader stance on a repair issue — pre- and post-repair scanning, ADAS calibration, aftermarket or recycled parts, structural repair methods, windscreen replacement, and whether a part gets repaired or has to be replaced outright. 

Think of it as the manufacturer setting the ground rules, not writing the full playbook. The position statement might say vehicles should be scanned before and after collision repairs; the vehicle-specific repair procedure then spells out what that actually looks like for that make, model, and job. 

Wording matters too, and it’s worth reading closely: mustrequiredshouldrecommended, and where applicable are not interchangeable. A manufacturer recommending a procedure still deserves attention — but it’s not the same as a manufacturer requiring it. 

The strongest evidence, in practice, comes from four things together: 

  1. The relevant OEM position statement 
  2. The vehicle-specific OEM repair procedure 
  3. The repair operation that triggered the requirement
  4. The supporting scan and calibration reports 

Put those side by side and you’ve got something more useful than an opinion from either side of the estimate. 

Insurers Are Right to Ask Questions 

None of this is an argument for rubber-stamping every line item. Insurers have a legitimate job managing claims costs. Assessors should push back on work that looks unnecessary, duplicated, or thin on documentation. And repairers need to show their working — that’s on them, not on the insurer to assume good faith. 

A solid ADAS calibration request should include the correct vehicle ID, the relevant position statement, the applicable repair procedure, the operation that triggered calibration, the pre-repair scan, the completed calibration report, and the post-repair scan. If any of that’s missing, asking for it is completely reasonable. 

But once that evidence is on the table and it clearly shows calibration is required, the conversation should shift — away from should this happen and toward how do we get it done and documented properly. The goal was never automatic approval. It’s evidence-based approval. 

Is Europe Doing This Differently? 

Europe has pushed ADAS further into the spotlight through regulation. The EU’s General Safety Regulation now mandates a range of advanced safety technologies across new vehicles, including automatic emergency braking, lane support, driver monitoring, and reversing detection.

That doesn’t mean every European insurer waves through every calibration claim — vehicle regulation and insurance assessment are separate conversations. But it does show that regulators over there treat these systems as core safety infrastructure, not optional extras. 

Australia mandates automatic emergency braking on new light vehicles too, and recognises ADAS through its own vehicle safety standards. The more interesting question isn’t whether Europe’s ahead — it’s whether Australia’s insurance assessment and repair approval processes are keeping pace with what’s actually rolling into local repair shops right now. 

Australia’s Framework Is Still Catching Up 

The Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry Code of Conduct sets out how insurers and repairers are meant to work together here. An independent review called for improvements to governance, dispute resolution, and consistency, and the Code consultation process has been looking at assessment times and repair methods.[3] 

That work matters. But there’s still no single, nationally visible ADAS rulebook that tells every workshop and every assessor exactly when a calibration must be signed off. In practice, the answer still comes back to the same evidence trail: what does the OEM position statement say, what does the vehicle-specific procedure require, what work was actually done, and can the repairer back it up on paper? 

So, Who Actually Makes the Call? 

The insurer approves the cost. The assessor reviews the scope. The repairer does the work and documents the result. But the technical requirement itself starts with the manufacturer — that’s not a workaround; it’s the starting point everyone should be working from. 

Where the OEM procedure is genuinely unclear, get qualified technical advice. Where it clearly requires calibration, overriding that call needs a stronger argument than “we don’t usually do it.” Cost matters. Turnaround time matters. Neither one should quietly override the documented method for restoring a safety system. 

The Dashboard Isn’t the Final Word 

ADAS is only going to get more common and more interconnected with everyday repairs. Repairers need to bring solid evidence. Insurers need confidence the work is genuinely necessary. Assessors need access to the right manufacturer data. And the customer deserves to know their safety systems were actually restored — not just that the warning lights went out. 

Repair costs should absolutely be scrutinised. But an ADAS calibration backed by an OEM position statement and a vehicle-specific repair procedure isn’t really optional — and treating it that way is the actual risk here.
